Monsoon (Matador Records)

Scott Kannberg states Pavement disbanded by mutual agreement. It definately served him well. He's put all his creative energy in writing own material. The result is a unique gem. Something like Sergeant Pepper's of the new millenium! In the CD era it's quite common records that last 60 min in average. Scott turnes us back to the old vinyl standart of 37 mininutes. You can play it plenty of times in succession without getting bored. Most songs flow calmly centered around the pedal steel of Chris Heinrich, who though featured as a guest, succeeds in playing a major role. His wailing sounds hit you right in the heart. Understandably, Scott's guitar and vocals dominate the album. His voice concentrates on the storytelling instead of a Pavement-esque screaming Scott is known for ."Get Your Crayons Out" has gathered an all star No Depression cast reinventing roots pop! It sees Jeff Tweedy, John Stirrat and Scott McCaughey helping Kannberg pay a tribute to the late great Johnny Cash. Dreamy, catchy, calming, rich, all the adjectives could be applied to this masterpiece recorded in a dark Seattle unfinished cellar. Predictably, additional basement tapes could surface in the near future.
