Goatsnake
1 + Dog Days (Southern Lord Records)

By: Jeb Branin

This is the CD re-issue of the first GOATSNAKE album. It includes the Dog Days EP and a couple additional comp tracks as a bonus. Considering how seminal GOATSNALE is to the neo-doom/sludge scene this is a CD worthy of a lot of attention. The first thing that strikes me as I listen to this is how heavily influenced the primitive GOATSNAKE was by Ian Astbury and THE CULT. I guess in more recent recordings I hadn't made that connection but on this album it very distinct (check out "Slippin' the Strealth" and "Innocent").

The next thing that strikes me is that in spite of this being a first effort it is still so solidly constructed and so heavy that it generates its own gravitational field. For example the riff that underpins the track "IV" is solid enough that a blacksmith could use it as a forging anvil.

Very extensive liner notes compliment the CD and add to its value as a historical marker. But hopefully nobody buys this for what it represents, but rather for how relevant it sounds. This is an indispensable addition to any doom/sludge collection.
