Paul Kerschen
The Mozart Club (Byzantine Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Portland, Oregon-based singer-songwriter Paul Kerschen has released a folk-infused indie-rock record with The Mozart Club. It leaves a lot to be desired. When he's full on rocking out, like on the latter half of album opener, "O Cecilia", Kerschen has something going. It's energetic, spunky, and fun. However, his more acoustic based stuff is mediocre at best, leaving a lot to be desired. And his bouncy, indie-rock jaunts, which populate most of the record, are over powered by his voice, way too high in the mix, sounding under produced and lacking in the mixing department. The record has heart and passion... now it just needs the song (and the voice) to flesh them out. I'll give it a C-.
