Peace on Earth (Broken Down Volvo of Hate)

By: Nick Mlatchkov

This Philadelphia quartet brings us back to the primitive punk sonics of the Sex Pistols. There're no false pretensions, no savvy production, just plain, pulsating, vital R'n'R. The title states it all. The lyrics, courtesy of vocalist Michael Subvert, are smart, ironic, unapologetic, and right in your face social commentary on the injustices of the American way of life. "Army of One" is the most critical strike on the right of 'shoot and kill' on someone's property. "Just Like Me" is a hit on the every day's reality of many poor families in the States. The content of Peace On Earth opposes heavily the title with its hopelessness. "The Devil Stole My Beer" brings to light some fresh black humour though it's quite entertaining. "She Works the Line" despises the slave labour in the Third World with a heartbreaking emotion. The heading of their label is also quite stylish. If you ever wanted to hear how the daddies of contemporary punk started than this album is for you.
