The Mattoid
Hello (Cleft Music)

 Ville Kiviniemi, known as The Mattoid, hails from Finland. Relocating to Nashville, and after The Poppy Fields Band (which he formed in 2001), he eventually released his debut solo record, Hello, a collection of Velvet Underground-meets-pub-rock anthems, with a slight psychedelic feel, that are flavored by his signature guitar technique simply known as "sango". Hello is a weird, often hard-to-swallow record, but once you get into it, and understand the uniqueness and peculiar charms of The Mattoid, the record becomes that much more inviting. And, once you've crossed that bridge, The Mattoid's individuality and oddball wit will make you a fan. I'll give it a B.
