Fiona Apple
Tidal (WORK/Clean Slate)

By: Mike Lingenfelter

On the opening track on Tidal, Sleep to Dream, Fiona Apple's sultry voice and piano tell you a story that delivers her emotion so well, that you beleive you understand how she feels about that old boyfriend. So do the other nine tracks on her debut album. Each song has it's own story, that she wrote after Andrew Slater heard her three song demo tape. All this at age eighteen. She has rode into her nineteenth year as a musician with a great debut album. Her first single, Shadowboxer had some good airplay on Mtv and radio. It was received well enough for her to make a second and third video and single, Sleep to Dream and Criminal.

In my opinion, she has as much in common with that 'other' wonderful piano playing woman, as any other musician who uses their heart and soul to make music. But if you like Tori, you may just like Fiona, but not necessarily. If you don't like lots of piano music, this isn't gonna be your thing, because every song is built around Apple and her piano, along with the usual pop-rock instrumentations.

Her words are like a sweet poetry, set to sometimes mystical and always intriguing music. Her songs move from slow jazz numbers, to slightly quicker tempoed pieces of art. The focus of this album was apparently to compliment her wonderful piano and voice. She has a certain appeal, that I can't place, but I believe it stems from what she says and how she conveys it.
