Ruder Than You
Horny for Ska (Moon Ska Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Ruder Than You is a very upbeat ska band from Philly. With their second CD, Horny for Ska, they deliver some memorable moments that will make you want to get up and not stop. They also cover such songs as "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath and "Beg You Little More" by Prince Buster.

The CD kicks off with their Black Sabbath cover. It starts off with some nice bass, and then the rest of the band enters and they start to jam. Then the vocals enter and all hell breaks loose. They definitely did this song better than Black Sabbath, and I've never heard the original! The next track picks it up a bit with a full horn section, and a more danceable beat to it. The track is "Uncle Albert," and the party has just begun. On track five they slow down the pace a bit with an instrumental. It's a calm song with powerful horns, and some nice drums to it. With this track you can take some time out from this album and just sit back and enjoy the flow of the music. Next up is "Skahall Connection." It starts off with some upbeat guitar and a heavier sound to it. It doesn't have the happy ska sound to it. It's a little darker for ska. Maybe it's the way the vocals are, or maybe it is the guitars heavier sound as its player strikes it up and down. But they restore all faith in their music with another instrumental jam called "No Way Out." Now you can return to dancing with this track! Track eight, "Daydream Drivin'," starts off with some nice guitar, and it sets the pace for a generally laid back song. The harmonious chorus helps the song to the ranks of one of the best songs on the album. Very nice vocals line this song, and play well with all the instruments. Definitely a must hear song! They end the CD with another instrumental. Starts off with some fast drums, and throw in a quick surf riff and return to some ska guitar, add the horn section and you have a brilliantly crafted song. The CD contains ten tracks in all.

On one track they lost my attention. The songs vocals just didn't go over well with me. But for the most part, it was a great album. Definitely something you can dance too! With some great upbeat tempo's and a well honed horn section, this band has a great future! I would give this CD an A- overall. A little improvement could have been made, but for the most part, watch out guys! Ruder Than You is on the rise!
