Union 13
East Los Presents... (Epitaph Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Ever think someone was less capable just because they were different from you? They didn't look the way you did, they were a different race than you, or they just spoke differently than you? Well, Union 13 has had to put up with a lot of that (even in their own community), because they're a Mexican hardcore act from California. But don't let that fool you, these guys can pump out the fast tunes faster than you can say "WOW!" Speed is one thing these guys excel at, and composing beats that will pull you in and make you beg for more is the other thing they excel at.

From the opening beat of "Who Are You?" these guys let the guitar rip you apart, while your heart beats to the rapid pace of the drums. The bass makes your head spin in amazement as you sit there and just sit aimlessly in amazement. What should you do? What can you do? You've been pulled into the game they want you to know. Suddenly you find yourself trying to create a pit in your own bedroom. Your dresser becomes your only foe as you jump and scream to the music, bouncing up, down, and around your room. But don't worry, with eighteen tracks to keep you happy, you'll be breaking things and running around for the whole thirty one minutes and forty six seconds this CD is playing. Eighteen songs in a little under thirty two minutes? Again, you'll be saying "WOW!" I told you these guys were fast. The speed keeps flowing through your body as choice cuts like "Fuck Society," "Children Stories," "Falling Down," "I Can't Stand it Anymore," "Government," and "Ronald's fuckhouse" play out. If you can't find something that will make your pulse race on this CD, you better check and make sure you have a pulse.

Not only do these guys sing songs in English, they also can do speedy tracks in their native language of Spanish. But you won't be able to tell the difference. The words will just flow right by you. The music is what you'll hear, and the words will just be too fast to understand. That's one of the downfalls of their speed. You can't understand the words without reading the lyrics and learning to time everything perfect. The other downfall, every song begins to sound the same after awhile. Everything is just too fast. I'll give this CD a B-. If you crave speed pick up this CD. If you like your music a wee bit slower, look elsewhere.
