Gus Gus
Polydistortion (4AD/Warner Bros. Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Gus Gus hails from Reykjavik, Island. Blending techno, electronica, dance, hip hop, and a bit of pop they come up with their own hybrid take on the 90's. Rich with ideas on music, each member of the band has an extensive history in the arts ranging from DJ's, poets, filmmakers, actors, photographers, and song writers. POLYDISTORION is their debut CD.

Gus Gus's sound is very unusual. It is so unique, it escapes each classification you could possibly label it with. It has spacey melodies which will get you thinking, a bouncy beat that will get you dancing, and a soft edge that will get relaxing. I could just image this CD being played at a rave, or a CD kids pop in for party music. But not all the music is electronica-esqe. "Why?" and "Is Jesus Your Pal?" are slow, soft pop tunes that are calm and gentle, showing a different side of the band. But the majority of the songs ride the electronica-edge.

Gus Gus are very talented. Their music is original, and they create their own rules, avoiding the tired and regurgitated rules of music. That being said, I find their music quite dole. I recognize and understand their artistic power, so don't get me wrong. They are very talented musicians, but the CD is too spacey, leaving a lot to be desired. The music just starts to sound the same after a while, and fads into the background. It has no driving point, and just seems to flow into the next song with ease. I'll give this CD a C+. It takes a lot of talent to create music like this, but this time it involved too much power that started to trip over itself.
