Leave it to those visionaries at Bomp Records to exhume rough mixes from the Dead Boys' 1977 Electric Lady sessions and issue them in loving track-by-track juxtaposition to their legendary Young, Loud & Snotty album: a record which two decades ago justly launched Stiv Bators & Co. briefly if brilliantly into the harsh glare of Punk Rock Anti-Stardom. Yes, what we have here are the original Stiv, Bob Clearmountain and Cheetah Chrome versions of "Sonic Reducer" et al in all their young, loud glory warts, farts and beauty scars intact. Sure, the drums often thud dull and flat, with vocals even more unpronounced than on the official Sire release, but so effin' what??! "All This And More" still shreds 99.9 per cent of the Aerosmith songbook, "Caught With The Meat In Your Mouth" hangs tougher than a stack of Zeppelin box sets, and a live recording of the Syndicate of Sound's "Hey Little Girl", like the Pistols covering the Monkees, puts things in historical perspective for those of you out there who haven't yet caught on that the (original) Seventies' punk movement was really nothing but the logical extension of mid-Sixties pop. But you know what's truly flabbergasting about this unpolished little gem? It sounds far more, uh, "contemporary" today - even in its unfinished state - than the ACTUAL album sounded upon its release back in '77! That means either the Dead Boys were the true fathers of Nineties rock, or, scarier still, things have not progressed one damn inch since these recordings were first whipped onto tape so very long, long ago. Think about it but first, go out and get this record!
