My Man Friday
Sassy Girl single (ABCD's Records)

By: Alex Steininger

My Man Friday, who hails from the Utah ska scene, blends a heavy dose of traditional ska with a bit of swing to make their very creative, danceable blend which will not fall on deaf ears.

Their latest single, "Sassy Girl," is strong material. The horns are bright and powerful, beating their way through your head with their quick punches turned to soulful breezes. The vocals are calm and steady, easily understood and clean. The guitar does its job well, getting you dancing and moving with little effort. The bass and drums keep everything steady and calm, holding everything together. And the production is nicely done, with everything falling into its place perfectly. The B-Sides, on the other hand, don't have the energy and production quality which accompany the title track. "Come Dancing" isn't a bad song, but the sound is very weak. You'll need to crank up the volume to get a good sound out of your stereo, but then you'll start experiencing a lot of the fuzz and hiss that comes from your stereo when you turn it up very loud. And "No Excuses" is the same way, although the sound is a bit better. The horns are nicely done, and the song has the power to get you dancing, yet the quality isn't good enough to portray enough power to get you to move. I can tell this band blows away all others live, and maybe with some better production and recording budgets they can do the same in the future on disc.

My Man Friday has a great future as a band. With the ska scene currently on fire, it's only a matter of time before someone pays attention to these guys, signs them, and gives them the attention they deserve in the studio. I'll give this disc a B-.
