Our Lady Peace Clumsy (Sony Records) By: Caitlin Richling
Two years ago, if Raine Maida had been walking down a street in his home country Canada, he would have just been a regular face. People would have just brushed by him- no notice taken. No one would have known that he was the lead singer of the Canadien-based band, Our Lady Peace, that actually had a major label release out (Naveed). But, since then, things have changed quite a bit. Maida and the rest of the band (guitarist Mike Turner, bassist Duncan Coutts, and drummer Jeremy Taggart) are familiar faces on MTV and are playing sold out shows across the U.S. promoting their latest album, a sophomore effort, Clumsy.Clumsy is a delightful album that shows Our Lady Peace exploring different styles. Maida's voice is an interesting one. It has the crooning power of Stephen Jenkins of Third Eye Blind, but with a sound more like Liam Gallager of Oasis.... only darker. The album has a nice balance between acoustic and electric guitars with Turner's signature guitar work. It is highlighted by the first single: "Superman's Dead", current single: "Clumsy", "4 AM", "Automatic Flowers," Hello Oskar", and "Let You Down". The collection of songs on the album also show off masterful songwriting with very real table topics. For example, a tortured geek in "Hello Oskar", bottled up emotions and whatever else you can draw from "Superman's Dead", and the self explanatory tracks "Car Crash" and "Clumsy". All in all, Clumsy is a must buy for all fans of alternative and rock. The music is surprisingly universal and each song is slightly unique in it's own little way which makes for a bundle of good songs. Listen for their upcoming single "4AM"!
