The Meat Purveyors
Sweet In the Pants (Bloodshot, 912 W Addison, Chicago, IL 60613)

By: [email protected]

Following in the footsteps of the Bad Livers, Austin's The Meat Purveyors are helping to drag bluegrass into the 90's and beyond. Giving traditional sounding bluegrass a ragged, at times manic, kick in the pants, this four-piece (with three different guest fiddlers) tear their way through a diverse cross-section of tunes from classics like Jimmie Rodgers' "Lady Muleskinner", Merle Haggard's "The Bottle Let Me Down" and "Burnin' Love" (not written by, but made famous by Elvis, and presented here stunningly as a traditional bluegrass tune) to twisted tracks like "Go Out Smokin'" and the brilliant dark cover of Glass Eye's "Dempsey Nash", and also display their stellar musicianship through two superb instrumentals -> "Victoria's Waltz" and "Bill's Breakdown". Sweet In the Pants is bluegrass on the edge.
