WHO HIT JOHN Hey Buffy (Not So Permanent Records, PO Box 120562, Nashville, TN 37212) By: GARY PIG GOLD
In the ever-widening world of guitar-driven, powerful pop/rock, Nashville's Who Hit John have produced a record most definitely to be reckoned with. Solid, skillfully executed and never less than tuneful, the eleven songs presented here touch all the requisite musical bases (ie: Big Star's "Don't Lie To Me" plus "The Mona Lisa", a song Cheap Trick should cover FAST) but never stop short at building something new and quite original upon such totems. "Smile Together", "Fan Club" and especially "Above The Fold" are all the work of a band as confident as it is cocky, but it's a seemingly inconsequential little song sandwiched into the # 8 position, "Somebody", that is the true, jaw-dropping gem of Hey Buffy: making fine use of George Martin's production style circa 1963 (hand-claps, bass piano lines) without once sacrificing the speed and punch of 1997, this is one song that unquestionably deserves to kick off each and every Power Pop comp the world over for the next year or so. In the meantime, while I for one await Who Hit John's next album, you all should not delay in getting yourselves a copy of THIS one.
