Era Era (Mercury Records) By: Alex Steininger
Physically from France, Era is lead by guitarist and composer, Eric Levi. Mentally, though, Era originated in Eric's mind and has now sold over 2.5 million albums in Europe. How to describe them? Original and unique would be a good place to start, but above and beyond that, slapping it with a label of "choir-pop with traces of dance" would be the closest thing I could come up with to categorize it. Rich, very lush choir-like vocals make their way through the album while a dance-pop style is tightly integrated. After listening to this album a few times, I was unsure of what to think of it. There were parts where the guitar, bass, and drums would be playing standard pop-rock and then suddenly Eric's vocals would come in and there would be a dance-pop beat behind them, then the music quickly jumped into a choir atmosphere, with many voices singing together to form a very lush stream of vocals. After sitting down and thinking about it a bit, I came to the conclusion this was a very original style of music that is going to either hit it big in the United States or fall hard. With Eric's unique approach to everything, I think this will have a profound impact on your easy listening variety of people, and will stake its claim next to such artists as Enya. As for the album, even though it wasn't my cup of tea, after listening to it three times I started to enjoy it. It's relaxing, it's calm, and it's gentle. I'll give it an A-.
