Billy Gordon and the Blue Rockers
Helmet Laws Suck (R.P.M. Mgmt.)

By: Paula M. Sherman

Oh boy! Did I have a lot of fun listening to this CD! And I had a lot of fun learning about them as well. Helmet Laws Suck kind of speaks for itself, doesn't it? What a great trip this release offered! Out of California, Billy Gordon and his band like to rock the motorcycle crowds with their powerful performances. Most known for using the ultimate instrument, the sound of Billy's antique Harley growling through the music as he revs the engine; while playing the sax and flute and singing. I've never heard anything like it. Amazing! This band plays the greats from Hendrix, Vaughn and Thorogood.

This Cd was recorded live at Sturgis Bike Run, and is a testament to how they can entertainment an audience. It starts out with the biker anthem "Helmet Laws Suck", and then the next is a rocking improvisation which is dedicated to the venue. They perform a Hendrix inspired "Scooter Child" with assistance from the Harley. I'm telling you, the engine sound along with the guitar just makes you wish you had on a leather jacket with the wind blowing through your hair! A great cover of "Heaven's Door" is performed, and another biker anthem, "Ride In Peace", is delivered with intense passion. The Harley starts up "Drive Gear Oil Slinger For a 32E". This tune's a fast little jammer, and reminiscent of the sound of Lynyrd Skynyrd. "CA Earthquake Blues" is next with the slow whiney blues sound accompanied with keyboard. And the CD ends with my favorite with guitars and keyboards, "Shit Happens", a comical spin off of "Alice's Restaurant" done up every trouble you could encounter in life! What a great song! I listen to this song when I'm pissed off, just so I can laugh again.

Now this band isn't for everyone. This is pure biker rock, and hails the sounds of the 70's with such solid enthusiasm. But if you're into this kind of thing, and you like to go to national and international bike runs and events of the kind, look for Billy Gordon and the Blue Rockers. Mostly likely, they'll be there ready to let those songs rip! To find out more about this band and their summer tour schedule, go to their web site at www.motorcycleentertain.com
