 They say an artist's biggest challenge is the blank canvas; a writer's, the empty page. Well, I bet an entire crate of unused recording tape wouldn't phase Princeton's one and only Chris Breetveld: given a day (and a PortaDAT), he'd have every inch of that tape saturated with music by noon, mixed by midnight, and out on the street very early the next morning. Pop Go! is Chris' thirteenth (I think) album so far, and he's no doubt written another tune or two since you started reading this review. Yup, you could call Chris a Quantity-over-Quality kinda guy, and it's true: none of the seventeen selections herein immediately hollers "Hit!"... or even "Play me again", I'm sorry to say. What is impressive is his decorum-be-damned stew of Zep/Rundgren/XTC/Move licks, smothered in such a morass of diminished-ninths and tricks of the tongue that one listen'll lock ya deep within the aural equivalent of some virtually surreal rummage sale: Suffice to say, there very well may be some true gems hidden amongst the rabble, but you're sure gonna have to dig for 'em.
