The Exotic Beatles, Part Two (Exotica Records)

By: Gary Pig Gold

I finally bought one of those "new" Beatle records the other day, and you know what? It hasn't spent half the time on the ol' pig player that this amazing disc has. Straight from the opening shit-kick of the Squirrels' hoedown-from- hell "Let It Be" straight through Prof. Stanley Unwin's Ogden's-Nut-Gone- flakey requiem for all things once fab, The Exotic Beatles is that most rare and wonderful of beasts: the multiple-artist tribute album that not only stands high and mighty of its own accord, but often actually Beats the Meatles at their own insidious game (ie: this record's a far more skillfully edited flow of music, dialog and audio esoterica than the aforementioned Anthology thingie). Sure your friends are all on board, reinterpreted with varying degrees of respect (Tsunematsu Masatoshi's Oasis-Blurring "Nowhere Man") and/or repulsion (Arthur Mullard's bangers'n'mashed "Yesterday"), but best of all, amongst all thirty (!) tracks included, there's nary a single Jeff Lynne- drum production in sight. Now, if that alone isn't guaranteed to raise a smile!
