Grip, Inc. Solidify (Metal Blade Records) By: Jeb Branin
Somehow ever time I hear a new GRIP INC. disc I expect more. The song writing is always strong, the musicianship couldn't be better, and the production is flawless. The missing ingredient seems to be something on a more visceral level. "Solidify" doesn't have any of the raw aggression that would so compliment a band of this stature. Everything is too clean, too calculated, too safe. The fast tunes never quite go over the top. The slow tunes never really get severe, never steam roll the listener with bone crushing riffs. GRIP INC. seem to have their sights set on a proven market (the PANTERA crowd) and don't bother to give their music an indelible mark in the process. I guess the thing that is the most frustrating is the fact with the pedigree this band has they should be leading the pack and pushing the envelope in their genre, instead they seem content to play it by the book. There are dozens of bands with nowhere near the talent of GRIP INC. who nonetheless produce more captivating albums. File under "for already established fans only."
