Roky Erickson Demon Angel A Day and Night With... (Amsterdamnded Records) By: Chris Paules
Being committed in the 1970's to avoid a drug charge was not without it's side effects for Roky Erickson. For in the 1990's, though somewhat of a hermit, Erickson has managed to amass a cult like following. In his heyday he was said to be the founder of what is now called Psychedelic Rock with his band The 13th Floor Elevator's. This compilation of live acoustic tracks performed in 1984 is a sterling example of his inspired songwriting ability. Though at times his lyrics often make absolutely no sense at all, or are entirely unoriginal, he manages to craft a likeable album with few low points. Among the 18 tracks on this album I especially enjoyed "Night Of The Vampire", "Hungry For Your Love", and "Stand For The Fire Demon". Backed on this album by his producer Mike Alvarez on electric guitar most of the tracks, and armed with his Neil Young-ish voice Roky Erickson posseses an ability to reach into his soul and bring out all of the demons and monsters that haunt him. Though at times the songs abruptly end, or it sounds like the tape just stopped rolling, the album carries itself and flows from song to song. Throughout the songs there are litterings of such icons as Neil Young and Bob Dylan, which the album ends with a rendition of Dylan's "Blowin' In The Wind". I'll give this album a B+.
