VARIOUS ARTISTS Twisted Willie (Justice Records) By: Gary "Pig" Gold
Whew! This one definitely could'a gone either way. I mean, the very concept of the tribute album itself is about as worn as the top of the Red Headed Stranger's guitar, but surprise surprise, as Gomer would've said, this project is pretty well an end-to-end success. Of course, with songs the likes of Willie's, you can scarcely misstep (although I sure could've done without Krist Novoselic's cool-quotient accompaniment behind John Cash's otherwise stately "Time Of The Preacher"), and when the wacked-up pairings work (howzabout L7 and Waylon Jennings?!!), they really work, and far and above the usual novelty factor. The Man Himself offers the ultimate stamp of approval by appearing alongside both the Supersuckers and Rev.Horton Heat, but I personally believe X's rendition of "Home Motel" is the topper here, making me pine even more for that Knitters reunion. Now, will each and every one of you thinking of grabbing your Twisted Willie do yourselves an even bigger favor and purchase as well some of Mr. Nelson's own fine records? Coz I hear those damnable IRS men are picking up his trail again.
