Dillinger Escape Plan
Calculating Infinity (Relapse Records)

By: Jeb Branin

Rarely are you going to find a debut album by a band that is so complete and so mature. DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN have that seasoned presence usually only associated with bands who have far more years under their belt. Part of that seasoning is due to the tremendous talent D.E.P. has; part is a result of paying some very hard dues on the way to the release of "Calculating Infinity". The paying of dues has proven both a positive and negative for the band. Positive in that they have had a chance to tour their butts off, gigging with some really great bands. Negative in that they have had to weather personnel changes and the tragic accident that left their bassist Adam Doll with a severe spinal chord injury. But hard knocks and hard work both breed success and if this album is anything it is a success. "Calculating Infinity" is a monumental recording that is destined to be a reference point in extreme music for years to come. DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN congeals elements of new breed metal, new breed hardcore, new breed emo and quasi fusion into a sound that almost brings about sensory overload. The music is so extreme and so ferocious that is can truly be described as violent, yet at the same time, it is complexly layered and multi faceted. There is so much gong on at any given moment of any given song that it is almost exhausting to listen to this CD. Add to this a very classy overall approach and clever CD packaging and you have a winner any way you look at it.
