Phobia Destroying The Masses (Pessimiser Records) By: Jeb Branin
PHOBIA are back in 1999 to follow up their brain frying Slap A Ham "Means Of Existence" album and they haven't lost much of a step. "Destroying The Masses" is not quite as diverse and far reaching as its predecessor but it is also rawer and, much of the time, more grinding. Almost, but not quite, a fair trade off. This CD has more elements of the band's early Relapse 7"ers evident making it a release that is both a look forward and a look back for the band. Whereas "Means..." was rather complex with the band taking the time to throw many different feels into the mix "Destroying The Masses" is more straight forward, more of a "let's get right down to business" type of a record. Fans of both the old PHOBIA and the new PHOBIA as well fans of the extreme in general are all going to get off on this. I would be surprised if it didn't show up on a few people's top ten lists this year. "Destroying The Masses" is available on both CD and 10" and you know I highly recommend the vinyl but sometimes it is hard to get those records shoved into the disc player in your car.
