Your Stinky Candy (Record Cellar)

 Enough cannot be said about this debut CD from NY's Mrs. Grundy. Unbelievably, this tight and powerful sounding disc was made by just two individuals, namely band mastermind Matt Scharfglass, who in addition to writing, arranging and producing (another major accomplishment considering the superbly produced disc was recorded in his bedroom) contributed everything except vocals and drums, both tackled by God Street Wine keyboardist Pete Levin. Throughout Your Stinky Candy Matt shows an excellent array of diversity that alt-rock fans should be all over from tunes with a melodic Bob Mould-like urgency to laid-back cuts with a bit of an edge and even a Satriani-ish instrumental, "The Best Time to Talk to the Bass Player's Girlfriend". The diversity also carries over lyrically with Matt showing a strong sense of humor through the likes of "Modern Rock Rules" and "Butt Cheeks", but also showing a more serious side, perfectly displayed with "One In Nine", which deals with his Mom's battle with breast cancer. Mrs. Grundy is one of those bands that for Matt's sake you hope breaks wide open, because he definitely deserves it, but would like to keep to yourself so the majors don't ruin a good thing.
