Aeternus
Shadows of Old (Hammerheart Records)

By: Jeb Branin

The new CD from AETERNUS illustrates why, beyond a shadow of a doubt, this band is deserving of all the hype surrounding them and why they are being looked to as the future of black/death metal. Blistering death metal delivered with heavy touches of blackness is not in and of itself unique but the razor sharp delivery of AETERNUS and their keen penchant for masterful song writing immediately demand attention. Their ability to make their sound progressive and forward thinking without sacrificing the roots of black and death metal lend them credibility not only as artists but as legitimate contenders to the death metal throne. Amidst all the chaos and brutality of their sound is a deep seeded attention to melody that even, at times, comes to the foreground of their sound. This adds a lot of dimension to their songs and allows them the luxury of inserting things like acoustic guitar interludes without it sounding forced or phony.
