Flowerland
1991-1997 2xCD (Kick Us When We're Down Records)

By: Jeb Branin

This is a two disc retrospective collection for one of my favorite "alternative" bands. In spite of owning a sound that was a perfect gel for the Soundgarden era grunge scene they never really were grabbed onto by the masses and Flowerland opted instead to operate with a DIY ethic. They never signed to a label, releasing all their CD material themselves and they never tried to be a flavor of the day or change their approach to try and cash in on a scene that was exploding all around them but somehow always passed them by. Their sound is an intelligent and deeply moving testament to the power and passion that can be created with guitar, bass and drum. Not unlike the aforementioned Soundgarden in many ways, Flowerland was a mix of class and crash. The class being their approach and vibe and the crash being their affinity for hard rock riffs and deep, throbbing rhythms. This collection spans the band's entire career offering 36 musical gems that range from rowdy to reserved. If you liked the heavy music of the 90s then you will like Flowerland.
