Ethereal Tomb (Season of Mist)

 Now here is a band that I assumed was long gone... NOCTURNUS were a force in the early 90s explosion of death metal and called Earache records home. Unlike most of their counterparts of the time who were all dueling to be the most "brutal", NOCTURNUS were attempting, and succeeding, in expanding death metal and taking it into realms it had not been in before. Their "spaced out" death was definitely some of the most progressive of the era. Y2K finds them solidly entrenched in the same vein. Their classic death metal is reminiscent of Entombed and they continue to incorporate plenty of keyboard and atmospheric embellishments without ever letting the music stray too far from the metal foundation it was built upon. I liked this band a lot during their first go around and this album does nothing to diminish my favorable opinion of them. I like a death band that also knows how to put an edge on the music and knows how to rock. With the boundaries of death metal having been blown wide open over the last five years NOCTURNUS don't sound very "out there" anymore so fans of really experimental death may find this a bit on the standard side but hopefully they will be inclined to pay their respects to one of the bands that pioneered variation in death metal.
