Death Cab For Cutie
We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes (Barsuk Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Death Cab For Cutie's sophomore release, We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes is a non-flashy, gimmick-free pop album that cuts through the crap and gets straight to the point. Laden with emotion, Frontman Gibbard's voice feels as if it could crack at any time, but is structured and solid enough to refrain from tearing apart. It reels you in with its sad tales of break up after break up, only to have you sympathizing and eating out of the band's collective palm half way through the album.

The soothing vocals are shaken up with guitars that go from sprinkles to showers of restrained fury, while the bass always keeps things tight, if not bold enough to give everything the boost it needs from falling into the "sleepy time" category of music. And the drums, well, they always shake you awake from any possible slumber you may fall into.

The lyrics aren't half-bad, either. Gibbard knows how to express his feelings and viewpoints on life without sounding artsy or vague. Like the music, he cuts right to the chase, and doesn't bullshit around, giving you a complete listening package you're surely to enjoy from start to finish. I'll give the album an A.
