Stompin' Tom Connors
The Confederation Bridge (EMI Music Canada)

By: Gary Pig Gold

In the Great White Northland's equivalent of the sovereignty ker-fluffle which flared as the Chunnel first joined Britain to France, many residents of the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island were aghast when a 12.9 kilometer span recently opened linking their sanctuary in the Atlantic with mainland Canada. Yes, both native P.E.Islanders and comparatively recent arrivees there were terrified that this gigantic bridge would forever rend asunder the unspoiled, untainted splendor of their red-soiled, potato-strewn isle by allowing any old Canadian with a car access to their domain. Well, leave it to none other that Canada's very own Hillbilly Shakespeare, Stompin' Tom Connors, to assuage fears throughout PEI and with a single song in the new bridge's honor bring Canada together as no politician up there in the last 200 years has been able to. Just who IS this Connors fellow, you may well ask? No less than a Canadian national icon, who for the last three decades has been singing and stomping his way across his homeland, rhapsodizing its fears and its spirits as well as its inhabitants, both good and evil, real and imagined, as no other has or can, there or elsewhere. As fiercely nationalistic as any Canadian before or since, but blessed with a talent for song and verse a thousand k.d.lang's or even Neil Young's could only hope to equal, this disc is a perfect place for the uninitiated to begin their Stompin' Tom collection, as it boasts, along with the title track, five other songs from throughout his long and illustrious career (including 1972's classic "Bud The Spud"). No, none of Connors' dozens upon dozens of releases have ever been made available outside of his home and native land, but this must not for one second deter you from writing to the address below and DEMANDING your fair share of Stompin' Tom this very instant. You won't be able to hear music quite like this anywhere else.
