American Dog Last of a Dying Breed (Self-Released) By: Geoff Melton
If Motorhead, George Thorogood and AC/DC got together to record an album the results would probably sound pretty close to this debut effort from Columbus' American Dog. Led by former Salty Dog bassist Michael Hannon (if you've never heard of Salty Dog do yourself a favor and check out their 1990 Geffen disc Every Dog Has It's Day) American Dog kicks out some of the most raucous beer drinking, meat and potatoes metal around, with an occasional burst of Southern swagger reminiscent of Jackyl and The Georgia Satellites ("Barely Half Alive", "Drank Too Much", "Dog's Life") thrown in for good measure. Last of A Dying Breed gives today's metal scene a welcome kick in the pants and is a welcome reprieve from the Korn's and Limp Bizkit's currently clogging things up.
