Scott Miller & The Commonwealth
Thus Always To Tyrants (Sugar Hill Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Scott Miller is a storyteller. His words read like short stories, able to draw you in as he tells you tales of growing up during wartime and seeing your brothers go off to war and die ("Highland County Boy"). Having a dad whom raised a boy and not a man ("Daddy Raised A Boy"). And, of course, heartache ("Loving That Girl").

Musically, Miller & The Commonwealth deliver roots-rock with plenty of punch, hooking you with gusty vocals and dirt-under-nails blue collar rhythms, warm hearted and honest, pushing the stories further into your conscious as you find them hard to ignore and even harder to forget.

Unlike so many albums, Miller manages to keep you entertained throughout by creating pure and honest songs, as well as not being afraid to rock out ("Goddamn the Sun"). He is a true brick and mortar songwriter, keeping things universal and easy enough to relate to, but paining enough fiction to entertain and take you away from the world for a bit while you listen in amazement. I'll give it an A+.
