The Strokes
Is This It (RCA Records)

By: Alex Steininger

The major buzz band of 2001 is The Strokes, a retro rock act that mixes 60's and 70's pop with straight ahead rock 'n' roll, a la acts like Television. And, as much as I didn't want to buy into the hype, Is This It is an astonishingly fine record. Though there are several hundred other bands (if not more) doing exactly what The Strokes are doing, The Strokes are good looking and talented, making the retro rock sound both retro and modern, something that can be quite difficult to do. Not to mention, The Strokes do it way better than most. This is a melodic, hook-laden rock record. It may have a bright, glossy sheen to it, but never forget this is three-chord, loud guitar rock, tenderized with pop, but still all out rock 'n' roll. And that, my friend, is why The Strokes are highly touted as-of-late, and deserving of every bit of praise they're getting. It's hard to create something this melodic and poppy and still make it rock. I'll give this an A+.
