Monster Movie
Last Night Something Happened (Clairecords)

By: Cam Lindsay

A decade ago, the droney, "shoegazing" scene was extremely popular in the UK with bands like Ride, Slowdive and Swervedriver. Recently, there has been a great surge in bands that just can't forget about the dreamy sounds of the past. One of these bands is Monster Movie, and ironically enough, one of the members (Christian Savill) was of Slowdive founded this band. Monster Movie's debut album, Last Night Something Happened, follows up a well-received self-titled EP released last year. The music isn't far off Savill's old band, which can be seen as a positive or negative thing. The soundscapes are lush and dreary, with both male and female vocals. Songs like "Home" and "Take Me Away" have a cathedral-like beauty to them that are hazy enough to act as a tranquilizer. "Ooby" borders on melodic pop and sludge rock (a la Bardo Pond), with its grimy guitars. For the shoegazing fan, Last Night Something Happened is a treat that should take you back a number of years.
