Covert Agency Covert Agency (Universal Warning Records) By: Randy Harward
Covert Agency's EP is tough to review, but a pleasure to spin. The band checks too many styles (indie, power pop, good ol' punk and even a dash of math rock) for a label to stick. The songs are titled, in they order they appear: "file: seventeen," "file: sixteen," "file: fifteen," "file: eighteen," "file: twenty-one" and "file: twenty," and lyrics are omitted as well, presumably so the listener is left to himself to glean meaning from them. That said, there will be no explanation or description of the record beyond this point, except to say it's a rough early effort by a band with chops and potential. For the music lover whose CD collection includes both Matthew Sweet and the Jazz June, if such a person exists.
