A Tribute To Weezer (Deaddroid Records)
By: Alex Steininger
Tribute albums range from great to a few good tracks to weak. Deaddroid Records' A Tribute To Weezer is somewhere in between. It has a few good tracks, several weak tracks, and a few tracks that are more copycat Weezer songs than covers.Affinity's "My Name Is Jonas" is a hardcore-meets-pop rendition of Weezer's classic. Imagine Rivers screaming while the band plays a song a bit harder, and that's just about what you get. Further Seems Forever's "Say It Ain't So" is an almost exact replica of the original, making me wonder why I would want to listen to this when I could just put on the original.
Then there are tracks like Christopher John (Elliot) and his rendition of "The World Has Turned...", adding his own pop to Weezer's version. And much acclaim should go to Dashboard Confessional's "Jaime", the most re-worked, original on the album. A stripped down acoustic-pop version with a rocking undertone.
When all is said and done, you'll prefer Weezer's versions to this tribute album. But did you expect anything else? However, this offers up a new outlook on your favorite Weezer songs, so give it a few spins. I'll give it a C.
