 With an ear for pop, The Eels have stunned and astonished listeners through four albums, always taking it up a notch and putting themselves to the test, to re-create the band, and to offer up something new. They've always managed to do so and Souljacker is no exception. A sonic collection of electro-infused rock and glowing pop songsmith, The Eels manage to pack a 1-2 punch in every verse-chorus punch they through at you, while dizzying you with their sparkling melodies and groove-filled rhythms that fly right by you if you're not careful. This is meaningful, life changing pop music. From the swampy-blues-rock of "Dog Faced Boy. The reckless muddy rock of "Souljacker part 1" and the slumbering "Souljacker part II". Through the hip-hop-blues-pop of "Jungle Telegraph" (a heavy song about a boy born in a storm who grows up to be a prostitute and kills a man in self-defense and moves to the jungles of Africa), The Eels re-invent themselves track after track. They are uniquely their own band, but pull it all together, as heard on "Friendly Ghost," a bouncy pop song with a constant drum beat echoing in the background and a trumpet flushing the song out. This is quality music that could save pop. I'll give it an A.
