Black Out (Saddle Creek)

 Tim Kasher's second The Good Life record, Black Out, finds Kasher and company once again delving into sleepy time, blurry-eyed star gazing songs. Overshadowed by a dark cloud, they do their best to move on, optimistic and peaceful, just buzzing by without really making any impression on those other than the ones aware of their presence. However, this time, when the nightmare hits, The Good Life is there to fend it off, turning the passive-aggressive sounds around, into more noticeable bursts of angst and driven rock-influenced moments. No matter what, though, The Good Life tries to always keep things peaceful, preferring to deliver a solid collection of songs rather than beat you over the head with a message or overstay their welcome crying on your shoulder. They play it cool, go for good tunes, and capture feelings on the way, building the songs throughout like a book builds a plot, and trailing off in the end as they go to live happily ever after. I'll give it an A-.
