Mull Historical Society
Loss (Blanco Y Negro)

By: Cam Lindsay

The Mull Historical Society is an actual organization that exists on the small island of Mull, in a remote part of Scotland. It is also the name of a band, led by the talented Colin MacIntyre, from Mull that felt it best to nab the name for their music. Funny thing is, there is something that makes MHS an ode to their little Scottish namesake. The songs on Loss are intimate, countryside accounts of MacIntyre's life, filled with children's choirs, horns and xylophones. Examples can be made of the apparent boy-meets-sheep love song, "I Tried" or "Mull Historical Society", the theme song MacIntyre wrote that gave him the idea of naming his band. The initial pop hooks MacIntyre is so luckily blessed with are as wacky and thought provoking as Pet Sounds or the latest Super Furry Animals offering. Songs like the Olivia Newton-John obsessed "Watching Xanadu" or "Animal Cannabus", with its mission of escaping and finding one's self, drift between weird sound experiments and extremely poppy melodies, that will find a permanent home in your head. Loss is a truly remarkable record that will leave you wondering why you aren't already a member of this extraordinary society.
