Morning Star (Koch Records)

 ENTOMBED have earned a deserved reputation of being an inconsistent band. "Morning Star" is another example of that. They began as the ultimate in crushing death metal and few were more influential. Their music evolved (in a rather jerky fashion) into a cleaner and smoother product which was pegged as "death rock." Their last album called "Uprising" was a backlash against their continued diversification and was a raw, stripped-down offering that harkened not only to their own roots but to the punk and hardcore influences that spawned death metal in the first place. With "Morning Star" the band once do the unexpected, although in doing so they seem to have acknowledged lessons learned. On this album they take the defiant and harsh feel of "Uprising" and merge it with the more musically expansive sound of the "Wolverine Blues" through "To Ride..." era. It is definitely worth noting that in spite of their sometimes baffling course corrections, there has never been a truly "bad" ENTOMBED album and if quality, instead of style, were the mark of consistency, ENTOMBED would have a different reputation.
