A.I.
DVD (Dreamworks)

By: Randy Harward

To his credit, Stephen Spielberg's tale of an artificial boy with real emotions struggling for acceptance is faithful to Stanley Kubrick's style and vision (as you may have heard, Kubrick was to make this film, but--) both aesthetically and thematically. The E.T. schmaltz is kept to a minimum and the film has an almost Clockwork Orange-y look and feel (the latter, toward the end). It does, however, seem to be two different films: the Spielbergian sci-fi flick (superficially futuristic and cheesy) and the Kubrickian sci-fi flick (futuristic and weird). For that reason, A.I. is good for a rental, but not a purchase. One viewing is more than enough and you will be somewhat dissatisfied, but you won't cry for a refund.

Special features: presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, making-of doc, interviews with Spielberg and stars Haley Joel Osment and Jude Law, B-T-S featurette, interview with sound designer Gary Rydstrom at Skywalker Ranch, examination of early "Teddy" footage, interview with Lucasfilm's SFX group, trailers, storyboards, drawings and still photos.
