Place of Skulls Nailed (Southern Lord) By: Jeb Branin
Considering that PLACE OF SKULLS was formed by a former member of PENTAGRAM, it is hard to believe how amazing this album is. Although I have a weak spot for bands like PENTAGRAM, there is just no comparison. PLACE OF SKULLS takes the lessons of original BLACK SABBATH flavored doom and incorporate the lessons of both the 80s (ala TROUBLE) and the 90s/Y2K (ala the Meteor City sound). The final product is a forlorn sound that still packs the punch of George Foreman in his prime. Southern Lord Records is known for taking only the most extreme and fringe of doom bands and giving them a stage on which to rage... PLACE OF SKULLS takes full advantage of their opportunity.
