 Mundane folk-rock with a singer who can sing, but can't write songs that take advantage of his voice, Jim Barbaro's Sketches is a flat, lyrically lacking presentation of folk music that gives folk music a bad name. Barbaro believes everything he is singing, and believes in his lyrics. It is that over abundance of self-confidence, an inevitable lack of quality control, that makes this record so murky. Barbaro can't see clearly; he blinds himself by fooling himself into believing the listener cares about what he has to say, even though he can't back it up with music to support the feelings he touches upon. I'll give it a D.
