Makin' Singles, Drinkin' Doubles (Bloodshot Records)

By: Mark A. Lawrence the IV

Makin' Singles, Drinkin' Doubles is a milestone, especially for the Bloodshot Label out of Chicago, a smaller label in a genera of music that doesn't receive much play time but grabs a hold of the hearts of true believers. Though they did not write the book on what everyone is now calling ault-country their chapter is one of outstanding contribution. In honor of the long list of music they have pressed on to vinyl, put to CD and brought to the public ear they have collected the B-sides and rarities of their out of print vinyl 45's to give the fans that might not have discover them until later a chance at these rare gems. All the familiar Bloodshot cast of characters are here. You got the Waco Brothers doing a cover of Jimmy Cliff's "The Harder They Come" You got, Neko Case teamed up with The Sadies, Kelly Hogan taking the prize with three numbers and Ryan Adam's long before his larger label popularity. Some of the unusual tracks include the dizzying The Madonna Trilogy by the Meat Purveyors which is a guitar plucking rendition of Like A Virgin, Burning Up and Lucky Star, and a Country twist to the notorious Poison song "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" by Rex Horton and the Misery Boys, which makes me wonder what Poison would have been like if they had found a place for a steel guitar in their line up. This collection reminded me a lot of a trip to Goodwill, when you go to the very back with all the plates and odd ends. There is so many cool things back there but its so hectic its hard to appreciate anything. I guess what I would have love to have seen was a repress of the 45's but this is good too. If you're a fan of Bloodshot this is a definite must have, and if not, then it's worth picking up for the two tracks by Andre Williams & 2 Star Tabernacle. Rating: C.
