Black Dice
Lost Valle (Tigerbeat6)

By: Cam Lindsay

After releasing last year's best psychedelic mash-up of the most colorful sounds ever imaginable, the foursome from Brooklyn, known as Black Dice, are keeping themselves busy. Released on Kid 606's Oakland-based label, Tigerbeat6, this little 3" CDep offers up more mind blowing noises. It's not quite as stimulating as Beaches And Canyons, but the two songs offered don't seem like they're meant to be. Containing far fewer elements, "Lost Valley" is an experiment with tribal drums that becomes very mesmeric, if you allow it to. The bits of frequency mixed in give it new dimensions and add wonders to the repetitive rhythms. The second track, "Head Like A Door", begins transcendentally only to rip into extreme blasts of loud sonic experiments through electric guitars and extreme effects pedals. It's a wise lesson in noisemaking that The Boredoms have taught many times, but Black Dice like to push the 'overdrive' button which makes all of the noise such a joy to hear.
