The Dears Protest (self-released/a>) By: Cam Lindsay
Canada's hotly tipped sensations The Dears have always done things their way without ever compromising their vision. On their debut album and follow-up EP, they showcased their knack for romantic lullabies through an intense manner and serious love for music. It scraped bits off of every meaningful spectrum of pop and constructed an attention-grabbing sound led by an entrancing organ and the demanding vocals of Murray Lightburn. Their new EP, Protest, is a shitdisturbing collection of three songs meant to be played in its entirety to maintain its effect (played separately, the message gets a little lost). The concept is potent, roping in the bassline from The Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer" to reveal that a revolution is on hand. When it begins to fade, it becomes a touching, near-death bon voyage, featuring that romanticism they're always getting labelled for. One part There's A Riot Goint On, another part Scott 3, Protest is another captivating chapter in this Montreal band's exciting story.
