The BellRays
Raw Collection (Uppercut Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Los Angeles soul-punk rockers The Bellrays deliver their latest, Raw Collection, fifteen b-sides, outtakes, demos, and songs from previously released 7"'s and compilations. The epitome of raw, Raw Collection burns through high-octane, loose, soul-fueled punk momentum with so much passion, and so much ease, you instantly get swept up in the insanity. Touted by the likes of MC5's Wayne Kramer, and described as "Arethra Franklin fronting the MC5", The Bellrays never miss a beat throughout the album's forty-one minutes, taking charge and letting it blast in the process. From the catchy, danceable strut of "Mother Pinball", the roaring "Pinball City", the political, instrumental jam "Swastika", or the ultra-rough, fierce "You're Sorry Now", the Bellrays deliver intensity track after track. This is punk rock as it was meant to be - raw, uninhibited, and full of soul. I'll give it an A-.
