Alejandro Escovedo
Gravity [Re-issue] (Lone Star Records)

By: Mark. A Lawrence the IV

I heard Alejandro Escovedo for the first time on a NPR show in college, I was so taken by the song I called the station just to get the spelling of his name right. I can't tell you today which song it was but it grabbed me out of a little Double AA radio and held on. That's what strikes you most listening to the re-release of his album Gravity. These are songs that get right in your gut and don't leave, even when your listening to another CD, or your mind is filled with something else, the realization hits you that your singing "Bury Me" or just repeating a line of "Last to Know" over and over. Even if you don't know his history in music you can tell Escovedo is a man who knows music, the way he puts the instruments together, making the most of their sound, without overwhelming the lyrics. This is no truer than on "One More Time" and "Oxford" both songs are filled with powerful guitars, supported by a heavy rhythm including an out spoken bass. What you get is a wall of sound that stands strong like a brick wall and doesn't bury you like an avalanche. Even on the slower number "She Doesn't Live Here Anymore" the way he uses the sound of the instruments to push emotions further is a strong-arm-powerful that makes you appreciate the musician that Escovedo is and the skills he uses to create such awesome music. Along with a great album, this re-release is packaged with an additional track and a second CD of some wonderful live material recorded at an in shop concert back in '93, which in itself is a great CD that runs a full 9 tracks, something you don't see very often with added material, usually it's three badly recorded wasting the space of a full sized CD.
