Vendetta Red
Between The Never And The Now (Epic)

 Originally released in 2001 on indie label Loveless with the different title of White Knuckled Substance, Vendetta Red's debut album is back, with a bit of added mastering, mixing and tracklisting shuffling to it. Now on the Sony major label Epic, Between The Never And The Now is now aimed at a mass audience and deserved of that it is. While the band shares crowds and bills with the likes of Glassjaw, Hundred Reasons and The Icarus Line, there is a very welcome pop element to Vendetta Red's music that the others seem to ignore or avoid. Frontman Zach Davidson's striking vocals stretch and bend from light cooing to ferocious screaming. A number of the songs, most notably "Shatterday" and "Suicide Party" contain high levels of quality melody. And to show they're willing to step out of the "scene" for a minute, Vendetta Red even include dreamy, ode to the 50s backing vocals on "Lipstick Tourniquets", as well as a top notch ballad ("Ambulance Chaser") that destroys the poor attempt Cave In gave on Antenna. Also present are the hard, crunching riffs and crashing drums but then again, that goes without saying. Post-hardcore finally has its most accessible album and its first real superstars to boot. A
