The Rip Off Artist
In Through The Out Door (Tigerbeat6)

By: Cam Lindsay

Continuing the fine tradition of messed up laptop rock, Kid 606's Tigerbeat6 label are now responsible for another troublemaker. The Rip Off Artist, aka Matt Haines, aka Mateo Hernandez, finds inspiration in crafting off-the-wall (both in a weird and bouncing ball kind of way), silly IDM. Though that may sound like a number of acts on the label, The Rip Off Artist is truly on his own, having lived a life that sounds more British Intelligence than eclectic DJ. In Though The Out Door, his first album for Tigerbeat6, is a wondrous bag of tricks filled with the anticipated glitches, distracting beats and tempo shifts. However, where his own personal style comes into play is how he builds his music into a funland of cartoon beeps, bouncy rhythms and a distinct knack for melody. "Yum" charges on like an Aphex Twin drill 'n' bass nosebleeder, if it was recorded in Technicolor underwater. "Bim Boom Bam" on the other hand, has some crazy, what must be, Spanish rhymes that have a certain Senor Coconut doing Kool Mo Dee on ketamine. It's hard to determine why he's such a king of illegal activity, but The Rip Off Artist is convincing as a true original, even if that may not be the case. B+
