Comets on Fire Comets on Fire (Alternative Tentacles) By: Jeb Branin
The music on this CD was recorded over the course of a year on a cassette four-track? so how come it sounds better than about half of the so-called professionally recorded punk albums I hear? Of course, I think a raw sound actually enhances this kind of music? I suspect that considering the circumstances under which this was recorded it is inevitably going to be described as garage-punk, but for my money that only tells a fraction of the story. COMETS ON FIRE creates a huge wall of noise (yeah, I know? on a four track recorder) that brings to mind some of the more unhinged AmRep bands. They also have a jagged and jangled big rock sound that is reminiscent of "Tangled Up" era NECROS or even the too oft neglected post-NECROS band BIG CHIEF. Additionally, it is impossible to ignore the influence of late 60s and early 70s acid/psychedelic/first-wave-metal vibes present here. I'd be stunned if members of COMETS ON FIRE didn't own records by IRON BUTTERFLY, BLUE CHEER, CREAM, HAWKWIND, STEPPENWOLF and THE AMBOY DUKES. I'd tell you to buy this before all your friends do, but your friends are never going to buy this. The only question here is, are you smart enough to buy it.
